1978 CHALLENGE CUP FINAL - Leeds v St. HelensThe 1978 Challenge Cup Final brought together at Wembley the Rugby League giants of Leeds and St.Helens - and produced a match remembered as one of the most pulsating
encounters ever seen in the shadow of the famous Twin Towers. A real war of the roses, the Loiners of Leeds were captained by David Ward and included the brilliant John Holmes at stand-off, with John Atkinson on the wing and a tough pack of forwards including Mick
Harrison, Steve Pitchford, Graham Eccles and Phil Cookson. Saints were the pre-match
favourites with the experience of Bill Francis at stand-off and footballing skill of Harry Pinner at loose-forward. George Nicholls played a mighty game in the St.Helens pack to win the Lance Todd Trophy but still finish on the losing side after an amazing comeback by Leeds enabled them to retain the Cup, thanks especially to the class of John Holmes. But the drama continued to the very last minute., with St.Helens going very close to victory.Commentary by Eddie Waring with David Watkins
